Is it not an amazing thing these days how quiet the people of God are? We lock ourselves away, cloistered inside our churches on our appointed days of worship. Buildings battened down and shut up like ships upon the sea. Doors shut, windows sealed tight! I wonder, are we trying to keep the worldly out, or the Spirit in?
It used to be churches had windows, and they actually opened! At some point the windows began to be frosted or colored or made of stained glass. Now most do not even have windows that look into the sanctuary. I remember a time when I attended a small country church that still had functioning windows. I being young and zealous in the Lord and full of fire once came and flung open all the windows so that the neighbors could “hear the Word of God”. I thought the elder deacon was going to faint. You want to know something? After that service some of the older brothers and sisters who could remember way-back-when, came and told me how that very church used to have services with the windows opened, and how people in the nearby houses did indeed come out onto their porches and sit and listen to the services.
Where are all the street preachers? Around Christmas we can still see the Salvation Army bell ringers outside the main entries to department and grocery stores. I wonder how many realize that the Salvation in the name is meaning salvation from Hell, and not from poverty? Do you think anyone recalls the Salvation Army being an army of street preachers? Remember how preaching on the streets used to be part of the requirements for licensing and ordination in some denominations?
The world is so upside-down and men are lost and dying in their sins. While we sit idle, when we should be crying out, Repent! John the Baptist did it, so did Jesus, as did all the apostles and most of the generations of the church until the last 20 years or so here in America.
Repent! Turn from your sin! Confess! believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved!
Matthew 3:1,2 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Matthew 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Mark 1:15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: Repent ye, and believe the gospel.
Jesus saying… Repent.
Mark 6:12 And they went out, and preached that men should Repent.
The Disciples saying… Repent.
Why do we no longer hear this command?
Why is this cry not echoing down the streets of our cities?
Is it not imperative? Why then was it declared in the first place?
Here is why:
Jesus gives us the reason in Luke 13 verses three and five,
3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
…except ye Repent, YE SHALL ALL LIKEWISE PERISH
Here is an example for us to follow.
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them,Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Acts 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;
Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to Repent:
Leonard Ravenhill once said, “Could a mariner sit idle if he heard the drowning cry? Could a doctor sit in comfort and just let his patients die? Could a fireman sit idle, let men burn and give no hand? Can you sit at ease in Zion with the world around you damned?”
How can we sit at ease in Zion as those around us every moment are stepping into eternity?
Where are the watchmen of the Lord?
Isaiah 62:6 I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence,
Ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence
Ezekiel 3:17-19 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
We MUST go out and proclaim this warning!
Jude 1:23 And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.
Oh God, let there be no blood on my hands. Let there be no missed opportunity to witness to the lost. Lord, do not allow me any longer to be at ease in this life. I have unsaved loved ones, lost children, friends, and neighbors. Give me an understanding of what eternity means Lord, and how short our time truly is. The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: send forth labourers into his harvest. Let me be one of those I pray.
