Do you love Scripture?
Have you read it in its entirety?
Or do you just kind of hang around the New Testament? Are you not too familiar with the Old Testament? Maybe we can spark some interest in the Old?
Hebrew Scripture is generally divided into three sections; these sections contain ALL the books of the Old Testament, just in a different order. They are as follows;
THE LAW (Torah) – Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy (The 5 books of Moses)
THE PROPHETS (Neviim) – Joshua, Judges, 1 & 2 Samuel (one volume), 1 & 2 Kings (one volume), Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, the 12 Minor Prophets (one volume)
THE WRITINGS (Kethubim) – Psalms, Proverbs, Job, Ruth, Song of Solomon, Ecclesiastes, Lamentations, Esther, Daniel, Ezra and Nehemiah (one volume), 1 & 2 Chronicles (one volume)
(Interesting side note: If you hear someone referencing the Jewish Tanakh, these are what they are speaking of the T= Torah, N=Neviim, K=Kethubim.)
So what is the point of this information you might wonder? The point is that there is great benefit in reading the Old Testament.
Most people who do not would be very surprised to find just how much the Old Testament is quoted in the New Testament.
In fact, how many times do we hear Jesus speak of the “Old Testament” writings as a whole?
Here are a few of those times.
Luke 24:44 And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the LAW of Moses, and in the PROPHETS, and in the PSALMS, concerning me.
Matthew 5:17 Think not that I am come to destroy the LAW, or the PROPHETS: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill.
Matthew 11:11-15 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffereth violence, and the violent take it by force. For all the PROPHETS and the LAW prophesied until John. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
Luke 16:16 The LAW and the PROPHETS were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.
