Ezekiel 3:17-19 Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me.
When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
Yet if thou warn the wicked, and he turn not from his wickedness, nor from his wicked way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul.
“GIVE THEM A WARNING FROM ME.”
It is not a loving thing to fail to warn people when they are in danger. In fact, in some instances our society deems it is a criminal offense if someone is harmed and the harm could have been prevented with a warning- the person who could have sounded the alarm is held accountable by the law for failing to do so.
Would we then not expect the Righteous Judge of all the universe to do the same?
In Ezekiel we see that God is going to do the same, He will hold those charged with sounding the warning accountable if they do not do so. And we further recognize that the guilty, the wicked, will still die in their iniquity. Without the warning men and women will die in their sin.
Today Christians have become confused about this issue. We deem it appropriate and even consider it loving to coddle people in their wickedness. We would rather avoid offending someone than tell them the truth. The fruit of this inaction is coming ripe and blooming.
Society has taken righteousness and holiness and accountability towards God and placed them in some compartmentalized box declaring that these things are altogether different and separate from reality. The Bible is no longer the authority- man is. The foundation of the Law (of the Lord) is good, (Romans 7:12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.) yet we have determined that man can decide what is good for himself. Pleasure is king, the morality of the day is doing whatever gives you the most immediate gratification. What most fulfills and satisfies your appetites- that do. The rampant obesity of our physical bodies is just a symptom of the underlying disease. We cannot (will not) discipline our appetites when it comes to consuming food, fuel for our bodies. Why then should we attempt to restrain any sensual appetite? Food, entertainment, material possessions, leisure, money, power, more and more- give me more is the cry from within our lustful hearts! Like rebellious children we want what we have decided is ours and will let no one take it away. As a society we have obstinately determined that we are going to live any way we so desire.
And the church? We are sitting quietly by watching, (and some) even falling away to partake of this lawlessness. We have neglected to sound the alarm and in so doing we have lost our effectiveness towards an entire generation of people who now have no true moral compass with which to guide their appetites.
With our actions Christians have allowed society to elevate the individuals feelings above the Truth of God’s word. Surrounded by men and women who are living lives all-together separated from God, steeped in perverse sinful lifestyles and we have decided to take a stance of “live and let live”; telling ourselves that we are loving them by not offending their sensibilities. In our world today you are invited to join everyone in living a life of love and tolerance, coexisting in unity, so long as you understand tolerance means not only excepting the opinions and lifestyles celebrated today, but you must celebrate and endorse the wickedness yourself or you will immediately suffer for being intolerant and bigoted. LIES!
To not give the warning is not to “let live”, it is really a death sentence– death for the sinner and judgement for the Christian who failed to warn.
In Ezekiel we read that it is GOD that is demanding the warning be given, why? There is a judgment coming- for EVERYONE. Feelings, appetites, happiness is not what are at stake here. Our worry is ultimately not about the physical lives of people so much as we are considering that fate worse than physical death- ETERNAL DEATH.
“When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life“
This is not the physical life being saved here, but rather that eternal existence wherein we will everyone enter into at our physical death. And more so the warning is not just to the sinful person to HEAR the call and be saved from their sin- the warning also is given to the one who is required to GIVE the warning. If we Christians do not sound the alarm blood will be required of us.
This is not some isolated thought pulled from an obscure passage. This is found throughout scripture, why?
Because judgement is coming!
Ezekiel 33:6-8 But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand. So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
2 Chronicles 19:10 And what cause soever shall come to you of your brethren that dwell in their cities, between blood and blood, between law and commandment, statutes and judgments, ye shall even warn them that they trespass not against the LORD, and so wrath come upon you, and upon your brethren: this do, and ye shall not trespass.
Isaiah 58:1 Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.
Jeremiah 6:10 To whom shall I speak, and give warning, that they may hear? behold, their ear is uncircumcised, and they cannot hearken: behold, the word of the LORD is unto them a reproach; they have no delight in it.
Matthew 3:7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
1 Corinthians 4:14 I write not these things to shame you, but as my beloved sons I warn you.
2 Corinthians 5:11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
2 Corinthians 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ’s stead, be ye reconciled to God.
Colossians 1:28 Whom we preach, warning every man, and teaching every man in all wisdom; that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus:
1 Thessalonians 5:14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men.
Christians pray that God put the words of warning in your mouths.
Pray for love, TRUE LOVE- for all man be placed in your heart.
Seek after God that fear might be found in you of Him so that you might stand and declare the truth that judgment is coming.
Pray that men who are dead and dying in their sins will hear and heed the warning that is given.
There is hope for reconciliation. God sent His Son, Jesus to die in our place. His death atoned (paid the penalty owed) for our sins. Through Jesus man can enter right relationship with God and this forgiveness of sin is offered to whomsoever will, this is the Gospel. With the Gospel there is hope offered, do not refuse the offer.
There is hope, and there is warning.
Hebrews 10:30-31 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
