The Bible, relevant for all time.
Ecclesiastes 10:2 A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left. (KJV)
And perhaps a little more precision,
Ecclesiastes 10:2 A wise man’s heart directs him toward the right, but the foolish man’s heart directs him toward the left. (NASB)
What a time we live in where truth is but an inconvenience, reality is relative, and anything goes. A time where one need not subject themselves to things like logic and reason. Reality is what you make it- just will it so.
Case in point; I witnessed a conversation on a social media site where the original poster voiced an opinion on a couple Bible verses, spoke only the truth, and quoted the Scripture in context. Oh! but truth is so relative anymore and to actually use it properly with purpose and intent is just too much for some. One person responded, (as if they have no choice they simply must inform of their having been offended), by advising the original poster that they had plenty to say to refute his argument, but it was far easier to just unfollow the conversation. Hmm, I suppose it is easier to turn away from truth, to act like it doesn’t exist, and hey! if you are lucky it might just cease to be truth. Right?
Unfortunately for the left, er, I mean fools there really is truth, there really are laws that govern reality and there really is a True and Living God with whom we will, everyone of us, have to give an account. Which is the heart of the matter, by the way… God. Or rather the plain truth that He exists, and more so, that He is the authority on truth being that He is the way, the truth, and the life. But the fool would deny this fact, just as they so blithely deny most facts when they prove too cumbersome for the free spirited enlightened ones. You know what I mean- the keyboard upon which I type these words certainly had a designer, yet the Universe did not. The simplest computer needs someone to program it, but our brains just randomly evolved. Surely you know of whom I speak, those deliriously happy people who feel any lifestyle is okay as long as you really, really, really love living it. It does not matter if it also brings with it psychological trauma, physical illness, and/or a host of other maladies. I speak of that upstanding group of individuals who feel murder is fine (so long as it is not themselves who are the recipients), not to worry though, their victims typically can’t yet speak for themselves. I refer to that august body which feels they can reject, denounce, and otherwise deny the Creator His rightful position of Lord of all the Universe, and scorn anyone who questions their folly. Hear their mantras: Marriage should be a union between whomever and whatever you want! Children are definitely meant to be objects of sexual pleasure, at any age. And all roads, especially the most murderous ones lead to heaven- well unless you are one of those ridiculous Christians. Those hateful, bigoted, narrow-minded, simpletons, well, they go straight to hell, no passing go.
Some of the notions mentioned in that last paragraph are highly offensive to even consider, and yet they exist and are fast becoming a reality in our society today. It truly boggles my mind. Do you ever wonder why we find ourselves in such a strange place? Or do you ask yourself how did we come to this place? “The foolish man’s heart directs him toward the left”, such a odd statement and yet, so relevant for today. Did you know the King James lists the word fool 69 times, often defining why he is a fool. I wonder if we should pay attention to something mentioned that often in Scripture? So what are some of the ways a fool is described in the Bible…
To begin with we are given what I believe truly defines the heart of a fool,
Psalm 14:1 The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
Once we seek to eliminate God from our lives we are left devoid of all that would allow us to live and continue living as human beings, love, value of life, decency, morality, hope, joy, peace. None of these can be found outside of God, not in any true lasting form.
Proverbs 12:15 The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.
How often we see this scenario played out in society today. We often witness the formation of some program built upon a flawed premise and then we watch it crumble, only to see the fool continue forward in it, blind to the failure, believing all is well. (Think Global cooling, which became Global warming, which is now Climate control.) The way of a fool is right in his own eyes. See how they scheme desperately needing to be in control, to declare there is no God, do they not know, can they not see that their end is destruction?
Psalm 2:1-5 Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
Again, and again we can read in Scripture God describing what makes a fool so that we might guard against becoming such ourselves.
Proverbs 10:23 It is as sport to a fool to do mischief…
Proverbs 14:16 …the fool rageth, and is confident.
Proverbs 15:5 A fool despiseth his father’s instruction…
Proverbs 18:2 A fool hath no delight in understanding…
Proverbs 18:6 A fool’s lips enter into contention…
Proverbs 18:7 A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.
Which way do you find your heart leaning these days, to the right or to the left?
